BARF Adult Menu

Our diet is based on Dr. Billinghurst BARF diet books

This Diet plan is for our Staffordshire Bull Terriers who are 3 months of age or older. Your plan may be different depending on your area and breed. If you are switching from commercial dogs foods then we suggest that you read this first.

The Diet:
60% raw meaty bones
15% crushed vegetables & fruit
25% meat mince & offal (organ meat, heart, liver, kidneys, brains, stomach (Tripe), intestines etc.)

It is VERY important to start out slow, with a very basic menu. Start with chicken necks and a meat meal with NO veggies or supplements for the first 3 weeks when you switch your dog to the adult BARF menu. Then add very small amounts of the veggie mix each day until you are at the recommended level for your dog’s weight. At 5 weeks start adding your supplements starting with flax seed oil. Again use this for the first week then slowly add another supplement. This should takes weeks even months to get to a point where you are adding all the recommend supplements. We also suggest NOT to add the supplements to the veggie mix, rather add them to the evening meal with yogurt being added to conceal the supplements. You will feel it important to change your dog’s menu as you go along. This is only a sample, suggested menu. You also may want to add or subtract supplements or different veggies, meat etc. as you go along. This is the great thing about the BARF diet menu it is very flexible.

Supplements: (when called for in menu)
Check this site for a great explanation of supplements!

Flax seed oil (usually 1 teaspoon)
Salmon oil (also known as fish oil) (usually 1 1000mg capsule)
Cod liver oil (usually 1 teaspoon)
Kelp granules (usually 1 teaspoon)
Evening primrose/borage oil (usually 1 1000mg capsule)
Vitamin E (usually 1 or 2 teaspoon of
first cold pressed Olive oil or 1000mg capsule)

Apple Cider Vinegar (1 teaspoon)
All natural yogurt (1 or 2 tablespoons)

** Sasha’s blend (or another joint supplement) (usually half of recommend amount as precaution)

** Staffords are prone to arthritis. It has been shown that shark cartilage, glucosamine, chrondroitin and MSM are effective for preventing or prolonging arthritis. So we suggest adding Sasha’s blend or another joint supplement each day to your dogs diet. You should be able to get this at your local health food store or any homeopathic vet. You can also check some Internet sites as well.

Mixing the Veg mix: (also called veggie slop) (this is only a suggested way of doing this, find what is easy for you)

1) Put mixed crushed vegetables (allot of green leafy veggies) (NO onions, potatoes, peas or beans) in a blender then add ripe fruit (whole apples, whole oranges, papayas, mangoes, kiwi, rock melon (cantaloupe) May be over ripe but not rotten, then add 4-6 eggs with the shells, 1oz (286g) fresh garlic and 6oz (170g) natural yogurt or equivalent of nondairy probiotic

Sample Menu:

The yogurt is added to help the aid in digestion. It also adds good bacteria to the gut for good health. If your dog does not have problems digesting these foods than this can be taken out of the diet. However, our dogs love yogurt so we add a scoop (about a tablespoon) each day. This is of course all natural (non-daily preferred) yogurt.
